Policies

• Please ensure you have read all policies and done sufficient research regarding hedgehog care and husbandry before completing the adoption application.

• Feel free to contact us with any questions in our email form on the "Contact Us" page. Contacting us with any questions that are answered in detail anywhere on this site will result in immediate denial of your adoption application. Again, Please do all your research BEFORE completing your adoption application. We are here to make sure our hedgehogs and our prickly parents live happy lives together, and research is needed for that to happen!

• An interview will be scheduled following payment of the deposit. All potential buyers/ adopters must be interviewed before a reservation can be placed on an available hedgehog. The reservation will be placed during the interview. All interviews/reservations are first come, first served.

• Minors younger than 18 are not permitted to be the primary adopter. A parent/ guardian must be involved.

• We do not adopt hedgehogs out to be given as gifts. A gift voucher can be provided following payment of the deposit, to be gifted to the intended individual. The intended individual must then go through the interview/reservation process as required.

• We do not permit breeding of pet hedgehogs. We do not sell hedgehogs to new breeders without a mentor. If you are an established breeder, please ensure you indicate that in the adoption application.

Adoption Timeline

Step 1: Complete the Adoption Application.

Step 2: Pay your non-refundable $50 deposit.

Step 3: Schedule and attend a phone interview with Premier Hedgehogs, reserve your pick during the interview.

Step 4: Submit photos of your cage/enclosure and all accessories including the heating setup OR purchase one of our available cage packages for pickup with your hedgehog at 8 weeks.

Step 5: (Optional) Schedule and attend a home visit with your reserved hedgehog. Home visits are $20 which is applied to your final balance. (Hedgehog must be 6 weeks old to visit)

Step 6: Schedule a pickup date once your hedgehog is 6 weeks old. Being late or no-showing for a scheduled home visit or pick up is a $25 fee in addition to the cost of the hedgehog.

Step 7: Pickup your hedgehog once it is 8 weeks old! Final payment is due at pickup. We hold babies for up to 7 days after the projected ready date, after 7 days your deposit is considered forfeited.

• We accept Venmo, Zelle, and cash. Other payment options also accepted in specific situations. Payment information will be provided to each client following approval of the adoption application.

• Deposits are $50 and are non-refundable. Deposits are required to reserve a hedgehog. The adoption application MUST be completed and approved before a deposit can be placed. Deposits must be paid via Venmo or Zelle.

• Final payment will be collected at pickup and can either be Venmo, Zelle or cash.

• We do not sell to anyone that has a primary address in any state where it is illegal to own a hedgehog. These states are: California, Georgia, Hawaii, New York, & Pennsylvania. Adopters from any state that requires a permit must present the necessary paperwork before reserving an available hedgehog.

• We do not ship at this time.

• All clients must provide photo proof of species appropriate housing including but not limited to the following elements: Large solid bottom cage (no aquariums), at least one hide/igloo/snuggle bag, appropriate water source, bottle preferred, (spring tension bottles are not appropriate), a wheel of at least 12" diameter, toys/enrichments) and a heat setup including lamp, ceramic heat emitter, thermometer and thermostat.

• Cage setups are available for sale to go home with hedgehogs.

• Diet will be discussed in depth during the interview and final approval will be required prior to pick up. Each hedgehog will go home with a small amount of food. Species appropriate diets include hard cat food supplemented with insects, and occasional treats such as boiled chicken. Store bought hedgehog foods are not nutritionally sufficient and will not be approved.

• All hedgehogs come with a 14 day health guarantee, if at any point within those 14 days the hedgehog is diagnosed by a licensed vet with a medical condition that is attributed to Premier hedgehogs, compensation will be discussed.

• All hedgehogs come with a 6 month congenital disease guarantee, if at any point within the first 6 months of life the hedgehog presents, as diagnosed by a licensed vet, with a congenital defect or disease that affects its quality of life or longevity, a replacement hedgehog will be provided.

• All hedgehogs come with a lifetime guarantee against Wobbly Hedgehog Syndrome (WHS). WHS is a very serious degenerative neurological condition that can only be diagnosed officially via necropsy. If at any point you or your vet suspects WHS, Premier Hedgehogs must be contacted immediately, prior to death/euthanasia, because there are numerous conditions that can cause "wobbliness" and a necropsy may be scheduled if death/euthanasia occurs. The buyer is responsible for all fees associated with the necropsy, but if, after necropsy, the hedgehog is deemed to have died from complications related to WHS, a replacement hedgehog from another line will be provided.

• Deposits are non-refundable as previously stated.

• Within the first 30 days following adoption, 50% of the purchase price will be refunded if the client determines that they do not want the hedgehog any longer. After 30 days, the hedgehog can still be returned to us, but no refund will be provided. If a client is considering returning their hedgehog, they should contact Premier Hedgehogs as soon as possible to discuss their concerns.

• All adopted hedgehogs must be returned to us if they need to be rehomed at any point in their life. Rehoming to someone that is not the original adopter is not permitted.
